Heavy fine to be imposed for failure to register child within a week from birth

A bill has been submitted to the Parliament a bill drafted by the government to impose a heavy fine if newborn children are not registered within seven days of birth.

The bill submitted by Henveiru North MP Ibrahim Muizzu states that if newborns are not registered at their respective island or city councils within seven days after they are born, an MVR 10,000 fine will be levied on the child's parents. If the child is born abroad to a couple that normally resides in the Maldives, the registration must be filed within seven days from the date of return to the Maldives.

Additionally, the bill also states that if a midwife form, birth register, birth certificate, or a national identity card is issued against regulations, a fine between MVR 15,000 and 20,000 will be levied.
