Russia emerges as top-performing source market for Maldives tourism

The number of Russian tourists who visit the Maldives has increased by 190 percent this year.

The Russian market is currently the top-performing market to Maldives tourism with an arrival figure of 124,651 thus far this year. The figure is a 190 percent increase compared to 2019 figures, and a 330.6 percent increase when compared to last year's figures.

India is the second-highest performing market to Maldives tourism with an arrival figure of 89,675 arrivals according to statistics by the Ministry of Tourism of Maldives. This is a 9.2 percent increase when compared to 2019 figures. 82,140 tourists visited the Maldives from India in 2019 while 34,864 tourists visited the archipelago in 2020.

Kazakhstan is the third top source market for tourist arrivals in the Maldives so far in 2021. 16.876 tourists have visited the Maldives from Khazakstan thus far this year, which is a 500 percent increase in arrival numbers compared to the 2,467 tourists who arrived from Khazakstan in 2019. The Maldives hosted 2,771 tourists from the country in 2020.

According to Tourism Ministry statistics, a total of 510,549 tourists visited the Maldives by the end of June 2021, crossing the half-a-million arrivals mark. While a total of 555,494 tourists visited the Maldives in 2020, and 1.7 million tourists visited the Maldives in 2019, the government hopes to host 1.5 million tourists this year.
