92,743 members eligible to vote in MDP elections

Main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has publicized its final voters' list for the party's upcoming National Council elections.

According to the list, 92,743 members are eligible to vote in the election. The party said it addressed complaints received from three different categories in compiling the final list. They are; complaints of registered party members' names being excluded from the list, complaints of non-party members being included in the list and complaints of party members' names being registered to other political parties, and thus not being included in the voters' list.

MDP said the party's committee on elections addressed complaints from the first two categories by checking the date on the receipt issued upon submission of membership application to the party. The party addressed the complaints of those who submitted the receipt within the given time frame, they said.

Additionally, the committee checked from the Elections Commission the date on which people from the third category were registered to another party. If they were registered to another party on a date before April 24, 2021, they were included in the voters' list.

MDP's National Congress election will be held on September 25. 730 candidates will be vying for 455 spots in the election. 165 candidates who are running uncontested have already been selected to some constituencies. 300 ballot boxes will be placed across Maldives and 900 officials will be involved in the election process.

MDP has 93,354 registered members.
