Over 142,000 tourist arrivals in October

Over 142,000 tourists visited the Maldives last October.

According to official statistics by the Tourism Ministry, 142,066 tourists visited the Maldives in October. This figure is a 56 percent increase compared to the same period last year and a 0.1 percent increase compared to 2019's pre-COVID-19 figures.

The figures for October are also a 23.6 percent increase compared to September this year. The Maldives welcomed 114,896 tourists in September.

The Maldives government initially aimed to host 1.5 million tourists this year. However, due to the challenges caused due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the number was revised to 1.2 million. The Maldives welcomed its one-millionth tourist for the year last week on October 19th.

As per statistics, the most number of tourists traveling to the Maldives arrive from neighboring India. While 22.7 percent of tourist arrivals for the year are Indians, the second-most number of tourists arrived from Russia, which is 18.6 percent of tourist arrivals.

The Tourism Ministry said the most number of tourists to visit the Maldives in one month was in August, with 143,599 arrivals. The most number of tourist arrivals recorded in one day was 6,000.

The Maldives closed its borders to tourists in March 2020 due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. While the tourism-dependent archipelago reopened its borders in July the same year, the country now welcomes 4,000 tourists daily, on average.
