Ex-pres Yameen will not be contesting for vacant Komandoo seat

The opposition has said that former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom will not contest for the vacant Komandoo constituency seat.

The Komandoo seat became vacant following the death of Komandoo MP Hussain Waheed. While a by-election will be held to fill the seat, some social media reports say the former president is interested in running for the seat.

Refuting the claims. a senior official from the opposing Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) said the party had not decided on a PPM candidate contesting for the seat. Even if a PPM candidate does run for the seat, he said it would not be President Yameen.

'These are baseless rumors some spread to divert attention from our 'India Out' campaign,' he said.

Applications may be submitted to the Elections Commission for the Komadoo by-election by December 30. The by-election will be held on February 5, 2020, from 8:00 am until 4:00 pm. Vote counting will begin 30 minutes after voting is closed. The final result will be announced on February 10.
