Seven additional arrests made in connection to Yoga Day storming

Seven more people have been arrested in connection with a group of youth storming an event held at the National Stadium to mark International Yoga Day.

The police have made 19 arrests thus far in connection to the case. On June 21, six people were arrested: Mohamed Nadheem (43) from Venus, K. Thulusdhoo, Mohamed Zilyan (37) from Ma. Kanuhuraa, Shaamee Rashad Idris (30) from Dhaftharu No. 1105, Mohamed Mausoom (40) from Happy Side, Th. Madifushi, Mohamed Hussain (47) from Green House, Ha. Thuraakunu, and Ameen Ahmed (35) from Lily Park, GDh. Rathafandhoo.

The following day, six arrests were made, including two religious scholars Sheikh Adam Nishan (38), from Asrafee Villa, G. Maamendhoo, and Sheikh Fazloon Mohamed (33), from Naaz, Sh. Milandhoo. In addition, Mohamed Ismail (48) from Yaagoothuge, Ha. Hoarafushi, Ibrahim Razzan (32) from Orchid Villa, S. Hithadhoo, Ahmed Nasooh (26) from Asrafee Villa, Ga. Maamendhoo and Abdulla Rifau (31) from Narugis Villa, Th. Thimarafushi were arrested.

On June 23, the police arrested Ahmed Ali, 26, from M. Falhumatheege, and Mohamed Zeeshan Nasir, 30, from G. Columbia. Ahmed Ali was remanded in custody for ten days, while Zeeshan was remanded in custody for five days.

Later on June 24, Ibrahim Zihan, 25, of Milano, N.Velidhoo, Ali Mirshad, 31, of Lucky Star, Aa. Maalhos, Mohamed Shan, 32, of Annarumaage, L. Mundoo, Abdulla Niyaz, 42, from G. Phoenix, and Ali Mohamed, 36, from Ali Abad, Th. Thimarafushi, were arrested. All suspects were remanded in custody for 45 days.

The case is being investigated by the Serious and Organized Crime Department of the Maldives Police Service.
