Over 107,000 employees registered at Pension Office

There were 107,018 employees registered with the Maldives Pension Administration Office (MPAO) as of October this year, budget statistics have shown.

The budget for next year presents the number of employees registered in the Pension Office as of September this year and the same period last year.

Statistics show that these numbers have been fluctuating over the months in the one-year period. In January this year, the Pension Office had 102,239 employees on its register, while 93,430 employees were listed on the record in January last year. By the end of September this year, the registered figure was 107,018, compared to 96,208 during the same period the previous year.

The budget noted that the Maldives has not yet been able to maintain employment statistics. It was also pointed out that the most accurate information needed to measure the workforce came from the statistics included in the census. In addition, data from the Cost of Living Survey are also used to calculate the estimates, it said.

The budget states that the statistics of employees registered with the Pension Office are used to obtain information on employees. However, the figures do not include foreigners, who make up a large proportion of the working population, those working in the informal sector, and those who are not registered with the pension office, it said.
