Nasheed expresses concern on voter register in letter to Party Chairman

The main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) 's President, Mohamed Nasheed, has voiced his concerns regarding the party's voter register.

Nasheed, who has announced that he would be contesting MDP's Presidential Primary slated for January 28 next year, sent a letter to the party's Chairman, Fayyaz Ismail, regarding the party's register. In his letter, Nasheed said over 40,000 people had been removed from the party's voter register without prior notice. He said he doubted that a free and fair primary could be held under the current circumstance.

Nasheed further said if the rights and participation of more than 40,000 members who have voluntarily joined the MDP are lost, next year's presidential election will be adversely affected. He also said the interests of the MDP would be jeopardized.

"Please ensure that the voting rights of the members on the party's voter register will not be lost when voting in the presidential primary," Nasheed wrote.

While MDP's Presidential Primary is a month away, in addition to Nasheed, only President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has announced that he will contest the primary.
