Nazim Abd. Sattar free after serving sentence

Brother of Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed and prominent lawyer Nazim Abdul Sattar has been released after serving a nine-month sentence.

A Bangladeshi national, MD Alamgiri, filmed himself having homosexual relations with Nazim Abdul Sattar and several other local men, including politicians, prominent businessmen, and law enforcement officials. Some of these videos were leaked on social media, prompting charges to be raised against those seen in the videos. Nazim was charged with sexual misconduct.

The Criminal Court sentenced Nazim to four months in house arrest in September last year after he pleaded guilty to the charges. Although the penal code states a nine-month and 18 days jail sentence for the offense, the Criminal Court gave initially gave Nazim a lighter sentence of one month and 28 days in jail as he had no previous criminal record and had confessed to wrongdoing and repented. However, when he requested to change his sentence to home arrest, the court decided he would be under home arrest for three months and 26 days.
