The Elections Commission (EC) has said 42 percent of eligible voters for this year's presidential election do not belong to any political party.
According to statistics revealed by the commission's Vice-President Ismail Habeeb, 283,272 people are eligible to vote in this year's presidential election. Of these, 162,935 (58 percent) are registered with political parties. However, the remaining 120,337 (42 percent) are not registered to any political party.
EC has scheduled the presidential election for September 9. If the election goes to a second round, the run-off will be held on September 30. The commission said 600 ballot boxes would be set up for this year's presidential election.
Dharubaaruge in Male' City has been designated the main election center for the September election. The election has been allocated MVR 90 million from this year's budget.
