CAM to determine maximum amount of SIMs that can be registered to one person

The Communications Authority of Maldives (CAM) will start determining the maximum number of mobile SIM cards that can be issued to one person's name in May this year.

The SOE Committee of Parliament is looking into the increase in scam phone calls in the Maldives. A police report submitted to the SOE committee highlighted a case where over 800 SIMs were registered to one person, another where more than 24,000 SIMs were registered in the names of two foreigners, and 38,000 SIMs in the name of 12 foreigners.

CAM's Chief Executive Ilyas Ahmed told the State Owned Enterprises Committee of Parliament today that they are working to formulate a policy where the amount of SIM cards issued to one person is limited. If multiple SIMs have already been issued under a single person's name, the person's identity and the SIMs will be verified, he said. It is expected to take about three months to complete the verification process, he added.
