Do not accept opposition coalition: PPM

  • Coalition is an illegal movement
  • Coalition moved by personal motives
  • Call on leaders to return back home

Ruling PPM has called on the United Opposition to cease their activities and that the Government does not accept the coalition.

A statement released by PPM today said the party welcomes all activities run by the opposition. However, the statement said the Party cannot accept any activity that is run against the Government with the assistance of foreign parties with the aim to negate the peace and stability of the Maldives. The statement said that such activities hampered the economy and sovereignty of the nation and posed significant losses to the public.

"The Party refuses to accept a coalition formed against the laws of the land, with the assistance of foreign parties, with the view to negate the peace and stability of the country," the statement said.

The United Opposition is led by former Vice President Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed, with MDP Chairperson Ali Waheed as his deputy. Former President Mohamed Nasheed, Adhaalath Party President Imran, JP Deputy Leader Ameen Ibrahim and former Defense Minister Mohamed Nazim are listed as advisors. A representative of former VP Adeeb is also part of the coalition.

PPM said the coalition was formed to fulfill the personal interests of a selevt group and was wholly against democratic values. The Party had invited all opposition figures to return back from their self imposed exile and conduct political activities from home.

The United Opposition yesterday had called for an interim government before the elections and had announced a shadow cabinet as well.
