Nihan, Muhthaz to be sentenced tonight

  • Three charges against Muhthaz, four against Nihan
  • Prosecuted under new Terror laws

The hearings on the case filed by the state regarding the faked court order to arrest President Abdullah Yameen has been scheduled for 11 pm today.

Charges had been filed against former PG Muhthaz Muhsin and Maamigilee Court Senior Magistrate Ahmed Nihan. Four charges had been filed against Nihan, while three charges had been raised against Muhthaz.

Terror charges, misuse of an official documents and faking a document charges had been filed against Muhthaz.

Nihan has been charged with procuring a fake document, abuse of power, committing an act befitting position and participating and carrying out an act of terror.

Nihan and Muhthaz will be tried under the new terror laws, therefore, a heavy sentence is expected on the two. If proven guilty of the terror charges, Muhthaz could earn a sentence between 20 to 25 years. Nihan could also earn a similar sentence, if proven guilty of having engineered and carrying out an act of terror.

Announcing the summary charges, state said evidence had proven beyond reasonable doubt that Muhthaz was guilty. Muhthaz's lawyer Husnu Suood at the time said the evidence had failed to sufficiently prove that Muhthaz had really attempted to detain the President and carry out an act of terrorism. He added the court order did not tie the former PG with the case.

Announcing the summary charges against Nihan, state lawyers said the evidence presented was sufficient to prove the charges. Suood, also the lawyer for Nihan, said the evidence had failed to prove the charges. He also said the evidence did not prove that Nihan had released that court order, adding that there was no connection between the order and Nihan.
