Dr Ali Naseer

Foreign Secretary Ali Naseer nominated as UN ambassador

Foreign Secretary Dr. Ali Naseer has been nominated as the Permanent Ambassador to the UN from the Maldives and the non-Resident Ambassador to Canada and USA. His nomination has been forwarded to the Parliament Committee on National Security.

The vetting was scheduled on the agenda for today's Committee session. The Constitution dictates that if a new Ambassador is to be appointed the nominee has to undergo the vetting process in the relevant Committee and the Parliament.

Dr. Ali Naseer is still serving as the Foreign Secretary at the Ministry. Foreign Ministry had confirmed that he is still serving as the Foreign Secretary. He was appointed to the position in December 2013. However, if he passes the vetting process, then he has to resign as Foreign Secretary.

Committee today had also deliberated on the nomination of Ahmed Shian of G. Samantha as Ambassador to Netherlands and Luxembourg. He is currently the Ambassador to EU.
