Umar resigns as Home Minister

Home Minister Umar Naseer has resigned from his position. The sudden decision was made public in a tweet posted on his twitter in which he thanked President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Qayyoom and others.

He has not been reachable for a comment. His resignation comes after his mandate as Minister was restricted after it was announced that a Committee will review issuing monicon orders.

With his resignation, the position of President of Local Government Authority (LGA) is now vacant. Additionally, he is now no longer Co-Chair of the Commission of National Inquiry, formed after the explosion aboard the Presidential speedboat.

Umar had previously stated that if he was to resign from the Cabinet he will do so after informing the President. He added that he had no intention of running in the next elections, but will definitely contest in the elections held in the elections after the next one.

Umar is yet to make a comment on why he had resigned. In a previous interview given to Umar, he said that he will never betray the President, but in the event differences of opinion came about, he would offer his resignation peacefully after informing the President of the issue.

Revealing his stance, Umar said that he "will not carry out an illegal activity", adding that he "remained firm in here [the Government].

Umar had previously ruled out any alliance with the opposition, stating that even if he had to resign from the Government he will not ally with the opposition. He had said that he will never work with former President Mohamed Nasheed, even if he was in jail, as he would never compromise the status of the nation.

"I have the intention to run for presidency. But that's in 2023. When I'm ready to campaign, for 2023, I will inform the President, leave the Government and launch my campaign. I will not begin campaign as a cabinet Minister," Umar said.
