Every child has a role in community development: President Yameen

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom reminded all school children to keep in mind that each of them played an important role in community development. The President made the remark while speaking at the O’ Level Top Achievers’ Awards 2015.

In his speech, the President appealed to all school leavers to be positive role models to society. He also said the nation expected students to always carry the torch of aspiration and education, forward through future generations.

In his address President Yameen said the top achievers have to seriously consider future options, make important decisions for their future and career paths. He noted that hard work was essential in future development. The President also advised the students had not made the Top Achievers awards, urging them to develop their talents and to show it to the society.

President Yameen said that prior to University education, discussions must be carried out with mentors and parents and to draw up study plans. He said University was the first step in educational excellence, earning degrees and doctorates. He noted that the eight years that go into this process and that planning was essential in figuring out their talents and core strengths was essential in this process.

"Every student has to explore what your personal skills are, search your inner soul. You have to believe that you have skills. Not every child can become a doctor or a lawyer, but every child has a skill. This process is where you learn your individual skills," he said.

The President further noted that every child has to aim for excellence, supported by a career and motivation, adding that motivation cannot be sought out just from books.

Speaking at the function, the President underscored three important lessons for all students - to determine one’s best skills; to always aim for success; and to adapt their knowledge to the real world in a manner beneficial to society.
