Maafushi guards save Murrath from suicide bid

Maldives Correctional Services (MSC) reports that convicted murderer Murrath has been saved from an attempted suicide bid.

MSC said that an inmate had attempted to hang himself last night around 8.30 and that he had been treated in Maafushi Health Center. The Services said he was recovering well and had been transferred back to jail.

Murrath was issued the death penalty verdict by Criminal Court and upheld by both High Court and Supreme Court for the murder of lawyer Ahmed Najeeb. The authorities are now carrying out the final arrangements to implement the sentence.

Murrath's then partner, Fathimath Hana had also been sentenced guilty of first degree murder in the same case. Both upper and lower Courts have stood by their decision to execute death penalty on Hana.
