Carnival grounds designated as protest zone in Male'

Home Ministry has designated that protests in Male' can now only be held in Carnival grounds, as per the amendment to the Right to Assembly act.

Home Ministry said that as per clause 24 (f), Carnival grounds have been designated as protest zones from now on. The Ministry also said prior to any protests, permits must be sought from the Police and Ministry.

Previously, protests can be held in any area other than areas designated as green zones in Male' after informing Police. Under this act, protests were banned in airports and ports.

The amendment, hotly contested by the opposition, was proposed by PPM MP Abdullah Rifau. The motion was passed with an overwhelming majority. The law says that Home Ministry has to designate an area within 30 days of ratifying the law.

Opposition had stated that they oppose the motion, as the right to peaceful assembly, without seeking permits, was a basic right granted in constitution. As such, they say the amendment in unconstitutional.

Carnival area is used for multiple purpose, including music shows, bazaars and lately for taking driving licenses as well as political rallies. The area is to become part of the grand mosque to be built with the assistance from Saudi King.
