Only 1.8 million dollars can be paid : Crashed ship

The Vietnamese ship that crashed into the Fuvahmulah reef "NGO Sun" has told the government that the largest sum they can pay for the damages is 1.8 million dollars (27.6 million Rufiyaa). The government had previously ordered the ship to pay 633.7 million Rufiyaa for the damage.

Chairman of the Transport Authority, Abdul Rasheed Nafiz said that the owners of the ship has decided to pay USD 1.8 million, MVR 27.6 million. He also said that this amount has been submitted to the Economic Ministry but that the government had not yet reached a decision regarding this. On previous occasions where a similar account occurs, settlements have been reached between the government and the owners of the ships.

"The government has not come to a decision yet. The government will always present the largest sum that they can take. It will include the cost of the research and all other costs," Nafiz said.

Ahmed Maumoon, Chairman of the Centurion Transport Solution, who are the Maldivian agents of the ship, said today that the owners of the ship had offered the largest sum they could pay. He also said that they could not pay any more than that.

The ship was heavily damaged when it was re floated, and as a result, the ship had sunk into the Indian Ocean. And a large amount of the ship's cargo was tossed into the reef in the re floating process.
