Parliament set for extended sitting to debate budget report

Parliament announced an extended sitting on Wednesday to debate the report sent to the floor by the parliamentary budget review committee.

During the parliament sitting on Wednesday, lawmakers from the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) proposed 17 out of the total 18 amendments to the budget report.

Most of the amendments looked to increase government provided allowances.

The parliament would debate the report until 7pm Wednesday.

The parliamentary budget review committee last week had signed off on the MVR26.7 billion budget proposed by the government for next year.

Proposed state budget for 2017

Total budget MVR26 billion
Proposed state revenue MVR21 billion
Budget deficit MVR303 million

With spending projected to reach MVR22.5 billion, a fiscal deficit of MVR4.3 billion or 4.4 percent of GDP is expected.
