Maldives seeks USD100 mln to fund waste management project

A discussion has been started Wednesday between financial banks and government institutions about the management of waste in the K. and V. Atolls.

The joint chairs for Wednesday's workshop were Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim and Finance Minister Ahmed Munawwar. ADB, AIIB, IDB and the World Bank took part as donor's. Other Maldivian institutions such as WAMCO, HDC, HPA, MOFT and MEE took part in the discussions as well.

Speaking at the event, the Finance Minister said that managing waste is of the utmost importance to the government, and that this will be reflected in the MVR 8 million set aside for this purpose in the budget for the upcoming year. He also informed that it would be costly to manage the waste in K. Atoll and V. Atoll but that the plan is for the project to start next year.

It is estimated that more than a 100 million dollars, (1.5 billion Maldivian Rufiyaa) will have to be spent on this project. "Donors have also previously expressed interest in participating in this project," the Minister said.

He also noted that small projects are going on with the help of the government budget and the World Bank.

The Environment Minister said while speaking at this event that the waste management in Male is divided into seven area and that the second region has now been completed.

"Region 2 is now complete and work has begun on Region 1, and effort is ongoing to start Region 3," The Minister said.

He also informed that after the Male' area is finished, a consultant would be found to do a research into the buildings that have been planned to be built in Thilafushi.
