Nasheed's lawyer sole candidate for MDP chairperson

A leading member of former president Mohamed Nasheed's legal team and former youth minister Hassan Latheef was sole candidate for the vacant post of main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) chairperson, the party said Thursday.

The post was vacated after Ali Waheed living in self imposed exile in the UK resigned this week.
Waheed in a letter to Nasheed, said he was resigning to pave the way for a leader who lives in the Maldives.

MDP secretary general Anas Abdul Sattar told Avas that the party would no hold a referendum to elect Latheef to the post which is slated for next February.

Waheed meanwhile, is facing terrorism charges over the violence that erupted during the May Day protest last year.

Waheed fled to Britain last year in fear of prosecution and has since been granted political asylum.
