Police vow swift probe into acid attack

Police on Sunday vowed a swift probe and seek charges against the perpetrators of the acid attack on an elderly woman in Shaviyani Atoll Lhaimagu island.

According to the island council, 50 year old Haleema Adam was attacked when she stepped outside her house early Saturday.

Police had arrested a 23 year old man hours after the attack before arresting a 21 year old shortly after.

"Acid was thrown in her face when she opened the door to go out around 5.30 in the morning," council president Abdul Ghani had told Avas.

Ghani had said the mother of two was rushed to the island health centre with severe burns on her face.

Haleema who is the president of the island's women's development committee has since been taken to the regional hospital in Haa Dhaal Atoll Kulhudhuffushi island and is expected to be released on Monday.
