Police end major anti drug operation

  • Over 1000 people, 21 places searched
  • Two expats arrested for smuggling
  • Over MVR200,000, drugs seized

The police have ended an operation started on 22nd December, which resulted in more than a 1,000 people being searched and 21 places raided.

Police said that out of the 1,004 people checked, 62 were detained on suspicion of drug abuse and possession, while a further 34 was charged for being intoxicated.

The operation saw 1.347 kg of hashish oil and 0.436 kg of heroin seized. Other drugs seized include 62 cannabis seeds and 14 bottles of alcohol, 2 bottles of 500ml filled with alcohol, rolled joints, 17 packets of hashish oil, 58 pieces of heroin and 101 pieces of cellophane.

Also MVR279,000 and USD710 were seized in suspected drug money.

An Indian man and a Sri Lankan woman were also arrested for smuggling in drugs to the Maldives. When the Indian man was taken to the hospital and scanned after being suspected of smuggling, drugs were found hidden inside his body.
