Maldives police aim for low crime year

Maldives police has set aim to address public concern areas and curb the crime rate in the archipelago in 2017.

Speaking during a sit-down with top officers, police chief Mohamed Areef insisted that the Maldives police service must aim for a low crime year and address the concerns of the public.

Areef urged police officers to give special precedence to social issues, traffic and undocumented workers which top public concerns.

Police also must identify and coordinate with other relevant state institutions in order to be more effective, the police chief said.

According to police statistics, theft and robbery topped crimes committed last year with over 3,500 cases reported to the police followed by 2,349 drug related cases and 774 cases of assault.
