Prison guards nab woman trying to smuggle drugs hidden in cake

A woman trying to smuggle drugs hidden inside a cake which she brought to prison was nabbed by prison officials.

Maldives Correctional Services said the woman had come with the cake to visit her brother in prison but did not divulge any more details.

Correctional services said such attempts by relatives to smuggle contraband into prison have been on the rise.

In December a man visiting an incarcerated relative was caught with a mobile phone, charge and a sim card hidden in some of the items he had brought in.

"Smuggling contraband into prison is a major obstacle by authorities to reform convicts," a statement read.

Condemning such attempts correctional services also urged relatives to refrain from acts that could harm inmates and society.
