Maldives records 79% pass rate for all subjects

The number of students who passed in all subjects during the 2016 O levels was registered at 13.2 percent hike in comparison with the year before, education ministry statistics have shown.

The statistics revealed by the Education Ministry after the release of the preliminary O level results for 2016 show that 79% of the students who took the exam passed in all the subjects, compared to the 65.8% in 2015.

With 5,410 students having completed their O levels in 2016, the number of students who did not pass a single subject was at 5%, while 10% of the students who took the exams in 2015 failed to pass in any subject.

The number of students who passed a minimum of three subjects is also at 79%, with only 64% of students managing to pass three subjects in 2015.

Education Minister Aishath Shiham said that the decrease in the amount of students who failed to pass a single subject, and the increase in students who passed all subjects pointed towards the progress achieved by the Maldivian education system.

Statistics also reveal that students did better in subject streams last year than in 2015, with pass rates for Accounting and Economics increasing. The science stream also fared well, with physics leading with 86.9% of the students passing.

The pass rates for the compulsory subjects, English, Maths, Dhivehi and Islam all increased by 2%, with the pass rates for English and Math alone increasing by 10% when compared with 2015.

The number of students who obtained 'A's and 'A*'s also increasing by 2% from 2015, with 17% of students achieving A*s in the exams. The Education Ministry declared 2016 as the year with the best results from Maldivian students to date.
