Parliament asked to probe allegations against police

A lawmaker has sought a parliament probe into the allegations made by the embattled ruling party city councilor, Zaidul Ameen, against the police.

Zaidul Ameen who represents ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) in the Male City Council has reportedly been accused of blackmailing top government officials and remains in police custody.

Ameen, is an ousted PPM leader Maumoon Abdul Gayoom loyalist had alleged that senior officials of the Maldives Police Service had attempted to force him to make a false statements which would allow for the arrest of former President Gayoom.

He alleged that the officers had demanded a statement implicating the elder Gayoom in a plot to overthrow the government.

Ameen further alleged that the officers threatened to detain him if he does not agree to give the statement.

The Professional Standard Command is also being investigating following the statements of Ameen, with Gayoom also expressing over the councilor's allegations.

Ameen is currently being held under police custody in Dhoonidhoo. He was previously switched to house arrest after request by police.
