Maldives island suffers flood damage after heavy rains

Several houses in Haa Dhaal Atoll Kulhudhuffushi island have suffered flood damage due to heavy rains on Saturday evening.

Kulhudhuffushi island council president Ali Mohamed said the island had experienced heavy rains from 8.30pm on Saturday which had continued for more than four hours.

Mohamed said the entire island has been flooded with several houses and schools suffering water damage.

"The water has seeped into several houses damaging household items. So far we've seen furniture and electronic items damaged in some houses," Mohamed said.

Mohamed said the council was still trying to determine the number of houses affected by flooding.

Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), police along with MWSC and the public have now commenced efforts to drain the flooded areas.

Heavy rains on Saturday evening had also caused power outages in some areas while the sewage system had also been affected, council said.

The meteorology department expects heavy rains to continue in the north of Maldives for the next 24 hours.
