Police seize ex-VP's lawyers' phones over 'false' claim

Police on Saturday seized the mobile phones of jailed former president Ahmed Adheeb Abdul Ghafoor's lawyers accusing them of over three separate accusations which included filing a false complaint, spreading false information and impeding the mandate of a legal entity.

The development comes after the two lawyers Moosa Siraj and Mahfooz Saeed informed the police of an alleged plot to assassinate the ex-VP.

Their phones have been seized under a court order for three months after reportedly they refused to reveal the source of the information.

Siraj had earlier said the information had come from a police officer but had refused to reveal the identity of the officer in fear of a possible backlash.

Police are also probing a picture of Adheeb taken while he was in his cell in Dhoonidhoo prison. The former vice president’s legal team have validated the picture. Police, however, have not commented on the matter.

Adheeb is serving 33 years in prison over two counts of terrorism and corruption including the blast aboard the presidential speedboat which has been now confirmed as a plot to assassinate president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

Adheeb meanwhile is facing multiple counts of terrorism and graft charges including a second assassination plot involving a Sri Lankan sniper.

Adheeb’s family had requested authorities to grant permission for Adheeb to travel abroad for medical treatment, claiming that he has been diagnosed with an internal cyst, kidney stones and a dangerous eye disease “glaucoma”.
