Police search ex-VP's jail cell for alleged mobile phone

Police on Monday dispatched a forensic team to search the cell of jailed former vice president Ahmed Adheeb Abdul Ghafoor for allegedly possessing a mobile phone.

According to a close aide of the jailed ex-VP, the team had been dispatched for the search to the detention facility in Dhoonidhoo island.

Adheeb had been transferred to the facility from the main prison in Maafushi island last year over rumours of an escape.

However, it remains unclear whether the police had found the mobile phone which Adheeb was using to contact his aides to pressure the government into allowing him to travel abroad for medical treatment.

Adheeb is serving 33 years in prison over multiple counts of corruption and terrorism which includes the plot to assasinate his former boss, president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
