Police arrest five in Dhuvaafaru island rape

Police on Saturday arrested five people in connection to the alleged rape of a woman in Raa Atoll Dhuvaafaru island last Thursday.

Police confirmed the arrests but refused to divulge any details of the case. However, AVAS understands that a minor is among the suspects arrested in connection to the rape.

The victim is reportedly a 25 year old married woman who lives in the island.

The latest incident comes in the wake of a rape of a 19 year old woman in a studio in the capital Male before a minor was raped at knife-point in Laamu Atoll Kalaidhoo island.

Police had arrested a man in connection to blackmailing an underage girl and his remand had been extended by 15 days.

Residents of the island who spoke to Avas said the man was a relative of the girl and had taken the victim for a ride around the island before raping her at knife-point after stopping at a secluded area.

According to the residents, the man had first demanded the girl to perform sexual acts for him and when she refused, he had raped her at knife-point.

The man then had taken pictures of the girl and had been blackmailing her before his arrest, the residents added.

The girl had reportedly shared the incident with her sister who had notified the police.
