Advocate Shameem granted lawyer privilege

Former deputy prosecutor general and prominent lawyer Hussain Shameem has been let go of by authorities following his summon to police on Thursday to hire a representing lawyer.

Shameem was brought forth authorities on allegations of spreading misinformation to public regarding police conduct and criminal proceedings.

The lawyer was summoned to Maldives Police at 20:00hrs on Thursday evening.

Authorities state he was brought in for questioning regarding the misinformation he disclosed on February 13 at Endherimaage (former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom's residence) during a press conference, regarding the evidence collected by police related to an ongoing investigation.

Shameem had presented at the authority on the scheduled time, upon which he was provided the opportunity to hire a lawyer to represent the case on his behalf and was let go. The lawyer confirmed he was not queried about the charges he is alleged with.

Police had demanded the lawyer to summon himself once again at the department Friday night on same time, in the presence of a representing lawyer.
