Lawyer MP again slapped with suspension

A local parliamentarian and well known lawyer has been once again slapped with a suspension on his practicing license.

The Department of Judicial Administration (DJA) confirmed MP Ali Hussain was suspended due to an ongoing case that alleges the lawmaker held contempt of court.

The statement from the department read the lawyer has continued to spread misinformation in public about top-court orders and has on multiple accounts hold contempt of court for which he has been questioned by authorities.

The suspension cites that until the ongoing probe on Ali Hussain's alleged offense has not concluded he cannot practice advocating at any judicial body including the tribunal of Maldives.

Earlier the MP was summoned to Supreme Court regarding the case while his colleague, lawyer Hussain Shameem was summoned at the same time as well. Both were questioned regarding the an interview they had given to RaajjeTV.

Both men are alleged to have spread inaccurate and falsified details about the local judiciary system - however both Shameem and Hussain deny the allegations made on them.

The MP was earlier slapped with suspension when he was involved among 52 other lawyers to present a petition to Maldives Supreme Court demanding amendments and resolve.

His colleague Shameem too is currently under suspension over an ongoing investigation.
