Ex-Pres Nasheed contends in MDP primary, submits form

The former president of Maldives Mohamed Nasheed, the founder of prime opposition Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) has presented his application to take part in the primary (internal) election of the party.

So far the only individual who has forwarded their name for the primary election is the former president himself. The form was submitted by Nasheed's manager north-Hithadhoo MP Mohamed Aslam.

It was obvious Nasheed who fled the island nation shortly after he was sentenced by the incumbent state to jail for 13 years for getting convicted of terrorism, would not have made the trip to submit the form personally.

In addition to Nasheed's electoral application for the primary forms of 7739 members of the political party were presented who backed the ex-head of state to run for the presidency once again.

Although ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and the government adamantly stressed Nasheed was ineligible due to his long sentence to serve time, he had spoken regarding his candidacy otherwise; stating he would receive the opportunity to run for the top-office at the last minute.

The 'Island President' also is campaigning to shift the Maldives governance system from a democratic one to a primary system.
