MDP primary voting window extends to midnight

The main opposition Maldives Democratic Party's (MDP) much coveted primary (internal) elections slated for May 30 will continue until midnight.

In an announcement from the political party it had specified the voting window has been extended on May 30, Wednesday from 14:00hrs to 00:00hrs.

The decision to extend the voting window comes over mounting interest from several party members to cast their votes in MDP's primary to decide the presidential candidate nominee. MDP had also added they extended the voting window to encourage more members of the party to cast votes.

So far the only member of the prime opposition party running in the primary is its initial founder, former president Mohamed Nasheed (Anni) without any contenders still placing their names.

In an attempt to respond to MDP's primary the island nation's electoral watchdog (Elections Commission) has warned they will intervene any party primaries continuing with the inclusion of individuals unfit to run for presidency according to Maldives Constitution.

Elections Commission along with ruling party as well as the state has coincided in their statements regarding Nasheed's ineligibility to run for presidency due to the 13 year prison sentence he carries of getting convicted of terrorism.
