Police warn strict action against death threats

Maldives Police Service on Wednesday have said they will not tolerate those who make threats, and will take action against them.

Comments made on social media with the intent to defame and ridicule religion, as well as those who threaten the life and property of individuals will not be tolerated, they said in a statement.

The use of hate speech in response to such comments will also be investigated, warned the police.

They further requested to report to the police if any threats are being made against an individual. The police urged to maintain the unity and peace of the nation in their statement.

A hike in hate speech and threats ensuing from conversations on some social media platforms have been recently observed.
