Govt to set minimum wage at MVR 200

Main ruling party, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has proposed a minimum wage of MVR 200 per day.

The bill is set to be proposed in the 19th parliament by the party.

A draft of the bills that the party will be submitting were included in a paper recently presented by the party. According to the document, amendments will be brought to the Employment Act to set an amount as minimum wage. The policy to decide the amount will be compiled after reviewing the work of the specific sectors, and different minimum wages will be set for different sectors.

The proposed minimum wages for different sectors are as below:

MVR 266.27 for the travel sector
MVR 266.67 for the fisheries and agriculture sector
MVR 200 for the construction sector
MVR 333.33 for resort workers
MVR 200 for other workers in the tourism sector
MVR 266.67 for the health sector
MVR 266.67 for education sector
MVR 200 for other sectors and services

According to the draft, the minimum wage will be applicable on both permanent and temporary workers.

The members representing MDP in the 18th parliament have advocated to set a minimum wage, however, then-government had not been very receptive of the proposition.
