Teachers sacked for wearing face veil reinstated

Education Minister, Dr. Aishath Ali has confirmed that the teachers who were sacked for wearing a face veil during former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom's tenure has been re-employed.

Speaking on 'Fala Suruhee' program aired by local TV station Raajje TV, Minister Aishath Ali said she does not believe it is acceptable for a person to lose their right to employment because of their appearance or the way they dress. Maldivian schools will now employ those wearing face veils and those who do not with no discrimination against either group, declared the Minister.

"We have now resolved all issues that were brought to our attention; we have reinstated them to their posts. We have also employed additional teachers who sport the face veil who applied for some posts", said the Minister.

Special rules are applied on the teachers who wear the face veil, which requires them to make their identity known when entering the classroom and teaching the students.

The previous government had fired several teachers for wearing face veils, blaming complaints received from students and parents.
