Man dies after boat catches fire

A boat has caught fire, killing one out of the 16 people aboard.

"Raavana" boat from Fuvahmulah city was traveling in the waters near Filitheyo island of Faafu atoll when it caught fire. The man died due to suffocation, and did not suffer any burns. He had already passed away by the time he was taken to Nilandhoo Hospital.

The incident occurred around 4.45am early on Monday morning. While the boat almost completely burnt to ashes, a large part of the boat has now sunk.

The remaining 15 people aboard were rescued, out of which nine were expatriates. The rescued people, who abandoned the burning boat and jumped into the ocean when the fire set ablaze, were taken to Dh. Kudahuvadhoo via sea ambulance.
