Foreign Minister calls on Vice PM of Romania

Maldivian Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid on Friday met with Romania’s Vice Prime Minister of Strategic Partnership Implementation Ana Birchall.

A statement released by the Foreign Ministry said Minister Shahid met with the Vice Prime Minister at Victoria Palace, the Office of the Vice Prime Minister during his ongoing visit to Romania. Minister Shahid and the Vice Prime Minister discussed the existing bilateral relations between Maldives and the European nation, and ways in which the relationship between both countries can be further strengthened, read the statement.

During the meeting, Minister Shahid expressed the country’s interest in promoting Maldivian fish products in the European market.

Minister Shahid and the Vice Prime Minister also discussed on areas such as health-care, disaster risk management, trade investments, education and information technology, counter-terrorism measures and ways on which violent extremism can be addressed.

Communications Director of Foreign Ministry Mohamed Miuwan revealed that while the Presidency of the Council of the European Union is currently held by Romania, the Foreign Minister will be conducting discussing matters related to the EU during his ongoing visit to Romania.

“The Minister will discuss regarding bringing in European investments to the Maldives, and decreasing the 24% duty currently imposed on Maldivian fish products, in addition to discussions on issuing a more liberal visa policy for Maldivians traveling to Europe”, said Miuwan.
