The country will witness positive changes in tourism sector - Minister

Tourism Minister Ali Waheed has stated that the country will witness positive changes in the tourism sector by the second year of the current government.

The government has been inspecting tourist resorts since they began administration in November in a bid to address the issues in the sector, said the Minister.

While inspections are expected to be completed by September 7, the findings will reveal the condition of local resorts and identify areas which require additional attention. The Ministry has been informing the resorts of the changes that need to be brought during inspections.

“As we go in to the second year [of administration], the changes will become apparent. Positive changes will starting taking effect in the tourism sector. This is not just idle speech. We will deliver on our promises”, assured the Minister.

While issues in the tourism sector cannot be resolved overnight, the Minister said he is confident that all issues will be resolved by the dates announced by the government. According to the minister, issues pertaining to employees in the tourism sector, ensuring the safety of tourists and increasing the number of Maldivians employed in the sector are among the issues that the government is currently addressing.

A hotline has been set up by the ministry to send in any complaints related to the tourism sector. The minister urged all parties to file complaints with the ministry and assured that all complaints will be investigated and addressed.
