Pres Solih ratifies Bill on Legal Profession

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Thursday ratified the Bill on Legal Profession.

The bill was approved by the Parliament earlier this week on Tuesday. President's Office revealed that the ratification of the bill establishes the Bar Council and its mandates, and all regulatory power related to Legal Professionals including issuing licenses and penalization falls within the mandate of the Bar Council. The bill also empowers Legal Professionals in strengthening academics in the legal sector with easier access to better training opportunities.

Six attorneys will be on the Bar Council in addition to the Council's President, Vice President and the Attorney General. All members with the exception of the Attorney General will be elected by a vote among lawyers. According to the law, the election must be held within 21 days from the date of ratification.
