MP Azim elected as MDP parliamentary group leader

Main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) on Tuesday elected Henveiru Uthuru MP Ahmed Azim as its Parliamentary Group leader.

While only Azim contested for the leader position, Henveiru Dhekunu MP Hussain Shaheem and Hulhudhoo MP Ilyas Labeeb were elected as Deputy Leaders. The three candidates were elected for the post with the approval of all 57 parliamentarians who took part in the yes-no vote.

However, competition was fierce for the whip positions with many candidates contending for the posts. Meedhoo MP Rozaina Adam was elected as Chief Whip. with Alifushi MP Mohamed Rasheed Hussain elected as the Secretary General and Central Fuvahmulah MP Hussain Mohamed Didi elected as Deputy Secretary General.

During the 18th Parliament, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih was MDP's parliamentary group leader while he was Hinnvaru MP. Hithadhoo Uthuru MP Mohamed Aslam then took over after President Solih was elected as President.
