Three ministers fail to present themselves at parliament within notice period

Three ministers have failed to present themselves to the parliament for within the 14 days notice period granted to the ministers by the parliament.

The three ministers are Transport Minister Aishath Nahula, Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid and Home Minister Imran Abdulla.

The motions to summon and question the three ministers were filed by Kaashidhoo MP and DRP leader Abdulla Jabir.

Speaking during Thursday's parliament sitting, Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed said the 14-day notice period granted to the ministers have now expired. Therefore, the parliament will discuss the matter with the ministers in question, and schedule for the ministers to attend to the parliament on a date convenient for them, said Nasheed.

According to Parliament rules, if a person is summoned for questioning, a 14-day notice period excluding government holidays will be granted to the individual.

Minister Shahid is being summoned to inquire regarding the government's progress in re-establishing diplomatic ties with Qatar, while Minister Aisha is being summoned due to citizens being fined for parking violations while a reasonable solution for the parking issue in Male' has not been offered by the government.

Minister Imran is being summoned to inquire regarding the steps being taken by the government to avoid a circumstance similar to what led to former president Mohamed Nasheed's resignation.
