'Govt has to be held responsible for Adeeb's escape' - Ex-VP Jameel

Former Vice President Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed stated on Thursday that the government has to take the responsibility for Adeeb’s escape.

Former Vice President of Maldives Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Ghafoor was captured in Tuticorin, India while attempting to enter India in a tug boat after fleeing the Maldives.

Jameel said in a tweet that the government's sincerity in investigating the MMPRC graft, through which billions in state funds were embezzled, will become evident from the way the prime suspects of the investigation are treated by the government.

The current administration must be responsible and held accountable for Adeeb's escape, he added, while questioning why the government has not expedited investigations.

"Govt's sincerity in investigating MMPRC corruption scandal will be evident in the way prime suspects are treated. Authorities must be responsible & held accountable for Adeeb's escape. Why can't this case be investigated swiftly when govt can expedite cases it wants?", wrote Jameel.

Adeeb traveled to India after the courts acquitted him of multiple convictions against him, making him a free man. However, an active travel ban has been imposed on Adeeb by the Supreme Court of Maldives due to ongoing cases. He remains a subject of investigation for alleged misappropriation of state funds, corruption and money laundering.

It has been reported that there was no news from Adeeb since Wednesday afternoon, and he failed to attend a scheduled meeting at the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) where he was to give a statement for an investigation.

While Adeeb was arrested in India, it has been reported that several close relatives of Adeeb are also currently in India. The tug boat named "Virgo 9" onboard of which Adeeb traveled to India is currently docked at Tuticorin Harbor. However, records show the boat was anchored off Hulhumale', Maldives earlier this Saturday.
