'MDP will take the lead in the local council elections' - Shifaz

Vice President of main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Mohamed Shifaz has stated that the party would take the lead in the upcoming local council elections.

Speaking at a ceremony held to conclude the Councillors' Congress organized by MDP, Shifaz said the current administration would not attempt to obstruct the local council elections, and will conduct the election on the scheduled date.

Noting that the government of former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom had been unsuccessful in defeating MDP in the last council election even in the face of adversity, MDP is assured to take the lead in next year's election, especially with an MDP-led administration currently in power, said Shifaz.

Shifaz added that the Councillor's Congress has renewed hopes of the people.

"We have been able to share with you all the plans we are making to bring about development to their islands, and the positive changes that will be brought to matters that affect their future", said Shifaz.
