High-ranking Customs officer terminated on corruption allegations

A senior employee of Maldives Customs Service has been terminated on corruption allegations.

The case has been forwarded to the Prosecutor General's (PG) Office for pressing criminal charges.

A customs official has the employee's dismissal to AVAS, although no further details were provided.

"As the issue is currently under criminal investigation, we cannot give further details on the case or the employee involved at the time", the official said.

It has been reported that the employee was terminated after it came to light that the officer was accepting bribes and providing undue benefits to certain parties during customs procedure.
