Fishermen suffering from decompression sickness taken to Bandos

Two local fishermen who got decompression sickness after going diving to catch bait has been taken to Bandos Island Resort.

The two fishermen from fishing vessel 'Azum' of GDh. Gadhdhoo was first taken to Dr. Abdul Samad Memorial Hospital in GDh. Thinadhoo. However, after the condition of the 27 yr old and 39 yr old fishermen detoriated, they were brought to capital Male' via MNDF helicopter late Monday night.

Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) said the two fishermen have now been transported to the Decompression Chamber in Bandos island Resort for further treatment. However, no further details on their condition was shared.

Currently, only one treatment chamber for decompression sickness exists in the Maldives, which is in Bandos Island Resort. Although Shangrila Resort in Addu city previously had a working decompression chamber, the chamber is currently not functional.

An emergency motion has been filed at the Parliament by Kaashidhoo MP Abdulla Jabir expressing concern on the lack of treatment facilities for those who suffer from decompression sickness.
