Elections Commissions (EC) has stated that only women from the particular island or city can content for the island's Women's Development Committee in the upcoming local council election.
The election for Women’s Development Committees will be held on the same date as the upcoming local council election which is slated for April 4, 2020. During the election, 895 members will be elected for Women’s Development Committees for the islands and 40 members for the cities.
The Chief Spokesperson and Vice President of the EC, Ahmed Akram said many individuals, as well as some political parties have been questioning if an individual can contest for the Women’s Development Committee of any island.
Referring to Article 56 of the Decentralization Act, Akram said according to the law, the members of the Women's Development Committee will be elected through an election held amongst the women of that particular city.
